  • Formation and Naming: The county was formed in 1867 and organized in 1871. It was named after Benjamin Franklin

  • Early Settlers: Early settlers were drawn to the area by advertisements highlighting the abundance of fuel, wild game, and natural beauty
  • First Settlements: The first homestead claim was made by Barnett Ashburne, and the initial settlement was known as the Thompson Colony
  • County Seat: The county seat was originally in Franklin City, moved to Bloomington, and finally settled in the city of Franklin by 1920
